Best Ecommerce Platform for Indian Businesses in 2026
We have built ecommerce stores on Shopify, WooCommerce, and from scratch. Each one has its place. But the right choice depends on where you are as a business, how much you want to spend, and what you plan to do in the next 12 months.
Shopify
Best for: Getting started fast
Shopify is the easiest way to start selling online. Period. You can have a store up in a day. Payment gateways work out of the box with Razorpay and PayU. The templates look decent. And you do not need a developer for the basics.
What we like about it:
- Fastest time to launch. Literally 1 to 3 days for a basic store.
- Built-in payments, shipping, and inventory management
- Huge app ecosystem for everything (reviews, upsells, email, analytics)
- Reliable. It does not go down. Ever.
What we do not like:
- Monthly fee starts at $39/month (roughly Rs 3,200). Adds up.
- Transaction fees on top of payment gateway fees unless you use Shopify Payments (not available everywhere in India)
- Customization is limited without a developer. Themes only get you so far.
- You do not own the platform. If Shopify changes pricing or policies, you are stuck.
Our verdict: Great for starting out. If you are doing under Rs 5 lakh per month in revenue, Shopify is probably your best bet.
WooCommerce
Best for: Flexibility on a budget
WooCommerce runs on WordPress. It is free to install but you need hosting, a domain, and a theme. The total cost is lower than Shopify long-term but the setup is more involved.
What we like:
- No monthly platform fees. Just hosting (Rs 500 to Rs 3,000/month)
- Extremely flexible. You can customize literally everything.
- Thousands of plugins for anything you need
- You own everything. Your data, your code, your store.
What we do not like:
- Slower to set up. Expect 1 to 3 weeks for a proper store.
- You need someone technical to maintain it. Updates, security patches, plugin conflicts.
- Performance can be an issue if not set up properly. Speed matters for conversions.
- Not as polished out of the box as Shopify
Our verdict: Best if you want control and are willing to invest in a developer. Good for stores doing Rs 5 to Rs 50 lakh per month.
Custom built
Best for: Serious scale
When your store does crores in revenue or you need features that no platform can give you, we build custom. From scratch. Using Next.js, React, or whatever makes sense for your specific needs.
What you get:
- Blazing fast. Sub-second page loads that no Shopify store can match.
- Complete ownership. No platform fees, no transaction fees, no limits.
- Custom checkout flows, custom analytics, custom everything
- Integrates with your existing tools exactly the way you want
What it costs:
- Rs 1,50,000 to Rs 5,00,000+ for the initial build
- Rs 10,000 to Rs 30,000 per month for maintenance
- Takes 4 to 8 weeks to build
Our verdict: Only worth it if you are doing serious volume or have very specific requirements. Otherwise Shopify or WooCommerce will serve you just fine.
So which one should you pick?
- Just starting, under Rs 5L/month: Shopify
- Growing, want control, Rs 5-50L/month: WooCommerce
- Scaling hard, doing crores: Custom built
