Why Your Google Ads Are Not Working (And How to Actually Fix Them)
We audit about 10 to 15 Google Ads accounts every month. Businesses come to us saying "Google Ads does not work for us" and almost every single time, the problem is not Google Ads. The problem is how the account is set up.
Here are the seven mistakes we see in almost every underperforming account.
1. You are using broad match for everything
This is the number one budget killer. Broad match means Google will show your ad for any search that it thinks is "related" to your keyword. And Google is very generous with what it considers related.
If you bid on "CRM software", your ad might show for "what is CRM", "CRM full form", or "free CRM download." Those people are not buying anything.
Fix: Use phrase match and exact match for your money keywords. Only use broad match with very tight negative keyword lists and smart bidding strategies.
2. No negative keywords
Related to the above. If you are not actively blocking irrelevant searches, you are wasting 20 to 40% of your budget. Guaranteed.
Every week, check your Search Terms Report. You will find search terms like "free", "salary", "jobs", "tutorial", "download" that are eating your budget.
Fix: Build a negative keyword list before you launch. Add to it weekly. We have master negative keyword lists for every industry that we apply to new accounts on day one.
3. Sending traffic to your homepage
Your homepage is not a landing page. It has too many options, too many links, too much information. A visitor lands there and does not know what to do next.
Fix: Create dedicated landing pages for each ad group. One offer, one CTA, zero navigation. We have seen conversion rates jump from 3% to 18% just by switching from homepage to a proper landing page.
4. Your conversion tracking is broken
This is shockingly common. You think you are tracking conversions but you are actually tracking page views, or button clicks, or something that does not equal a real lead or sale.
Without proper tracking, Google's algorithm cannot optimize. It does not know what a good click looks like. So it just gets you clicks from anyone.
Fix: Set up proper conversion tracking. Track actual form submissions, phone calls, and purchases. Not page views. Use Google Tag Manager and test everything in GTM preview mode before going live.
5. Too many keywords in one ad group
If you have 30 keywords in one ad group, your ads cannot be relevant to all of them. Google rewards relevance with lower costs and higher positions.
Fix: 5 to 10 closely related keywords per ad group. Each ad group gets its own tailored ad copy and landing page. This is called SKAG or tight-theme ad groups.
6. Your ads are boring
Everyone writes the same ad copy. "Best [service] in [city]. Contact us today." That is not going to make anyone click.
Fix: Use specific numbers, specific results, specific offers. "6.2x average ROAS for ecommerce brands" beats "Best digital marketing agency" every time. Test at least 3 ad variations per ad group.
7. You gave up too early
Google Ads needs data to learn. If you spend Rs 5,000, get no results, and turn it off, you did not give it a chance. The algorithm needs 15 to 30 conversions to start optimizing properly with smart bidding.
Fix: Commit to at least 30 days and Rs 30,000+ before deciding if Google Ads works for your business. If your setup is right (fixes 1 through 6 above), you will see results.
What to do next
Go into your Google Ads account right now and check three things:
- What is your Search Terms Report showing? Are you paying for junk searches?
- Where are your ads sending people? Homepage or landing page?
- Is your conversion tracking actually tracking real conversions?
